Located near Asheville, in downtown Waynesville, N.C., the "Gateway to the Smokies," Herren House Bed and Breakfast provides the perfect spot for a getaway to the beautiful North Carolina and Cold mountains. The Great Smoky Mountains and Blue Ridge Parkway are only a few minutes' drive away, and it's 30 minutes to Asheville and the Biltmore Estate. This is an excellent area for hiking, bicycling, rafting and exploring waterfalls. This unique 19th-century boardinghouse has been completely and exquisitely restored, reflecting its Victorian charm and casual elegance. At Herren House, breakfast is exceptional, complete with music, hand-ironed linens, fine china, casual conversation and candlelight. Breakfast always begins with coffee, tea, juice and fresh seasonal fruit. The French apple butter muffins, almond coffeecake, lemon apricot scones and chocolate cinnamon rolls are heavenly, only to be followed by a filling entree. Guests can stop by the sideboard in the dining room almost any time of the day and choose from a selection of homemade cookies, brownies and biscotti. Real lemonade, peach iced tea, a cup of spiced cider or freshly brewed coffee make a perfect accompaniment. Guests who are fortunate enough to be lodging at Herren House for Saturday evening dinner can sit back and enjoy an elegant five-course gourmet dinner by candlelight in the dining room or in the gardens (weather permitting). For a special treat and upon request, guests can have breakfast in bed. The inn will also put out afternoon tea/coffee if it's requested. Guests are welcome to spend an afternoon sipping refreshments in the rockers on the spacious wraparound porches, in the gazebo, or stroll through the gardens. Each of the six beautifully decorated guestrooms is named for a member of the Herren family and retains much of its original Victorian flavor. Reminiscent of the old days, each room has a unique atmosphere, whether it's because of the clawfoot soaking tub, mountain views or views of the gardens.
